Lisa McCausland
was born in Belfast in June 1964 and educated in a local girls' grammar
school. She followed her two elder brothers into the family motor
business becoming a director of McCausland Holdings and Value Cabs.
In her thirties
Lisa decided to branch out to explore her artistic leanings and moved
to California, settling in Los Angeles. She quickly embraced the
Californian lifestyle discovering that she was at a stage in her life
to explore the philosophy of body, mind and spirit. Beginning a journey
of personal development through self awareness she took full advantage
of workshops and classes in the neighbourhood Zen centre.
Mingling with
artists and writers challenged her to think about how she could express
her feelings and intuitions - it wasn't long before she rekindled her
love of art. Never a shrinking violet, the combination of Lisa's
personality and the bright Californian sun produced some wonderful
abstracts in a bold range of colours. She recalls that the first
painting she sold was an oil in vivid turquoise hues - the client bought it
to hang in her Santa Monica beach house, and was inspired
to redecorate featuring the colours of the painting.
Lisa's work was
exhibited in Martell Gallery on Sunset and in the Create:Fixate
exhibition in downtown L.A.
Just as she was
becoming established, her father's health deteriorated and during his
prolonged illness Lisa travelled back to N.Ireland many times - after
his death, she made the decision to return here to be closer to her
mother.
Having moved back to Ireland she
continued with her work which has been sold by the Heron Gallery in
Carrickfergus, The Whalley Gallery in Hollywood and The Tom Caldwell
Gallery on Lisburn Road in Belfast.
While
preparing her portfolio, Lisa said, "It was such a thrill for me when all
my pieces chosen by Chris Caldwell were sold on the opening night of
his summer exhibition. I am very excited that Chris has given me the
opportunity to hold my first solo show."
Lisa's artwork
is composed of mixed media, using paint and a lightweight substance to create
layers of texture and depth. The method depends on Lisa achieving the
desired effect. She doesn't tell people how to interpret her artwork,
or how to feel about it. Her belief is that art should be
enjoyed, like music for the eyes.
Her art is
fluid, and applies the principles of expressionism. She follows an
abstract style; the action employed sometimes invades her
pieces, creating her drip art.
One of her foremost
influences would be the late, great Jackson Pollack. Lisa also has a "get acquainted period" with her work, and identifies with Pollack when he said, "When I
am painting I'm not aware of what I am doing. It's only after a 'get
acquainted' period that I see what I have been about. I try to let it
come though...when I am painting I have a general notion of what I am
about... there is no accident..." Like most abstract painters, Lisa is
often asked, how she knows when she is finished?. Lisa quotes Pollack again
when he replied to the same question "How do know when your're
finished making love?"
"I couldn't put it better myself!" stated Lisa. |
